A couple of hot political issues have been in the news lately. Yesterday, the senate voted to repeal the “Don’t ask, Don’t tell policy” so gays are allowed to serve openly in the military and recently, the Dream Act was voted down in the Senate which allows children of illegal immigrants to become citizens provided they follow certain guidelines.
The Don’t ask, Don’t tell policy was bound to be repealed. Public opinion has been in favor of the repeal, but is it such a good idea to repeal the law? I do believe that gays should be allowed to serve in our military and many are very outstanding soldiers and commanders. But my concern is the reaction of fellow soldiers who are straight and will be offended by the actions of openly gay troops. Isn’t the military about working together as a team and such actions will greatly affect morale and could lead to serious divisions for our troops. Certainly the last thing we need when fighting a crucial war. I believe more commanders should have been given a say in this as opposed to a few politicians. Many military personal were opposed to the repeal so it is unfortunate that a few politicians, many of them who have never served in the military, decided to change this policy.
The Dream Act is pretty much the same old debate about illegal immigration. I have never understood why people are so up in arms about this not passing! Come to this country LEGALLY and we will help you get those benefits of becoming a U.S. citizen. What part of LEGAL immigration do people not understand!!! ? Every year, taxpayers of this country are bilked millions of dollars by these illegal immigrants. Sure there are many people who migrate to the United States from other countries ever year. But they go through the proper channels before entering this country. This country does not have the resources do accommodate the illegals and their children. It is not fair for the many millions of people who were born here to shoulder the burden of illegal activity.
